Learn Balamukunda Ashtakam with Vedicology online. One of Hinduism’s many forms of devotion is to love god as if the lord were your child. This hymn is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is said to be lying on a leaf of a banyan tree and then going a float on the rushing waters of the final deluge. He is picturised as holding his foot and putting his toes in his mouth. The hymn’s first stanza depicts Lord Krishna, as a baby and then describes the adventures of this God Child in his role as a baby. This great prayer’s first stanza is also found in Sri Krishna Karnamrutha , a great book by a poet named Leela Shuka. It is unknown if he is also the author of this prayer.

Bala Mukundashtakam: A tale from the Bhagavata Purana states that Bala Mukundashtakam was written by Sage Markandeya. Markandeya is a devotee to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
Once when the earth was about to be engulfed by water, Markandeya prayed to Bhagavan Vishnu to rescue him. Bhagavan Vishnu appeared in the form of a child floating on a leaf, and declared to the sage that He was Time and Death. He requested the sage to enter into his mouth and save himself from the surging water. Inside the stomach Markandeya discovered all the worlds, the seven regions and the seven oceans. The mountains and the kingdoms were all there. So were all living beings. Markandeya did not know what to make of all this. He started to pray to Lord Vishnu. No sooner had he started, than he came out of the Bhagavan’s lotus mouth. Lord Vishnu now appeared before him and blessed him. The sage spent a thousand years with Lord Vishnu. He composed the “Bala Mukundashtakam” at this moment..
This poem was inspired by Sage Markandeya’s vision of the Lord as an infant, lying in the folds of a banyan leaf in the middle of the primordial sea. The venerable Sage is sucked into this infant’s mouth and surprised to discover that the entire universe is inside him.
