In Hindu thought, all that exists in this universe belongs to the Supreme Lord. He is the architect of the entire design. Therefore, most traditional Indian homes have a prayer room in house. The intent behind this is to acknowledge that the Lord is the real owner of our house. And we are simply the earthly occupants of his property. Such a notion rids us of false pride and possessiveness.

When one enters such a charged room, one feels peaceful and solaced. The ideal attitude is to regard the Supreme Being as the true owner of our home and consider ourselves his caretaker. Should you find it difficult to accept this concept, think of him as a welcome guest during the puja hours and treat him thus. We must keep the prayer room in the house clean and well decorated. As the saying goes, cleanliness is next to godliness.
