Which is the ideal sleeping direction? Have you heard your grandparents telling you to no sleep with your head towards the north? And when you ask them why they may tell you “VASTU DOESN’T ALLOW AND THIS IS BAD FOR HEALTH.” Well, Vastu Shastra has definitive rules on how you should position your head, but sometimes it’s interesting to note that there are mythical stories as well. Have you thought about which is the best direction to sleep?
The Story of Ganesha
You all must have heard the story about GANESHA and LORD SHIVA? If not, it’s okay, I am gonna share that. Long back, Goddess Parvati stationed Ganesha at the door, so that no one could enter, while she was taking a bath. Lord Shiva entered the house and demanded to see Parvati. However, as instructed, Ganesha did not allow Shiva to go in. In anger and frustration, Lord Shiva cut off Ganesh’s head.
When Parvati finished her bathing and came out, she got flooded with anger. She demanded, Ganesh, to be brought back to life! Therefore, it was decided that whichever animal was sleeping with his head in the NORTH DIRECTION, would be cut off and fixed on GANESHA. That’s why Lord Ganesha has an elephant face and mythology has an interesting way of telling you to not sleep with your head towards the North Direction. So which is the best direction to sleep? Let’s figure out the ideal sleeping direction.
What Vastu Shastra Says on Sleeping Direction
Indians have their beliefs embedded in Vastu-shastra which is our ancient science on architecture. According to Vastu-Shastra, head directed towards the North is a strict No-No. For good health and sound sleep, your head must be in the East or South direction. Why is East or South the ideal sleeping direction?
Vastu scriptures mention that sleeping with your head towards the North direction can lead to disturbances in sleep. You may feel restless during sleep and tired the next day. Ancient people do believe in these theories and therefore request the new generation to follow the same.
North-North Repels
You all must have read Physics till class 10th, right? Remember the theory, ‘LIKE-LIKE REPELS, LIKE-UNLIKE ATTRACTS?’ Just like that theorem, our head is the north pole of our body. And sleeping in the north direction would result in REPULSION and go AGAINST NATURE and the natural energy flow in our body.
Due to the repulsion, one might experience unpredictable effects, such as stress, disturbing sleep and affected blood circulation. When your head points towards North during sleep, the earth’s magnetic field interferes with that of your body. And when you do this for longer times this can create fluctuations in your blood pressure.
To avoid this repulsion, our grandparents tell us that we must sleep with our heads in the East or South Direction. These are considered to be the ideal sleeping directions.
Medical Science does not support ideal sleeping direction theory
As spiritually advanced our country is, we also have a well scientific background. Medical science does not support this theory. It says that there is no scientific reason behind not keeping your head towards the north direction while sleeping. Medical Science further states that the conventional saying has no scientific roots and is purely based on ancient beliefs. Medical science says that all sleeping directions are equally good.
